About Farquhar MacRae of Morvich

At the time I write this entry, I have found four credible documents that refer to Farquhar MacRae.  In cronological order they are:

(1) Scotland Official Parish Records (OPR) (067/000 010 0016 Glenshiel) of 15 Jun 1815 reflects the marriage of Farquhar MacRae son to Farquhar MacRae tenant at Morvich and Katherine Maclennan daughter to the late Murdoch MacLennan Kililan.  Click the following link to view the marriage document: [download id=”1″]

(2) Scotland Official Parish Records (OPR) Birth for Donald MacRae of 16 Oct 1827 which reflects – To Farquhar MacRae alias Farq Oag a son named Donald born 16 Oct 1827. Click the following link to view the birth document: [download id=”3″]

NOTE:  This document was exacting proof of the birth of Donald MacRae due to two reasons: (one) Donald stated his birth year and location on several Scotland Census reports; and (two) there were no other Donald MacRae births to a Farquhar MacRae in that year in Kintail or Glen Shiel, Scotland.

(3) Scotland Statutory Marriage Records for Donald McRae and Jane Dickie (178/00 0006) of 15 Nov 1856 which reflects that at Coneyclaich Cairney marriage (after banns) was solomized between Donald and Jane according to the forms of the Church of Scotland.  Donald’s residence at the time was a the Huntly Lodge in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

NOTE:  This document was, in fact, the FIRST piece of evidence I obtained about Farquhar MacRae, who Donald listed as his father.  Donald also listed Farquhar’s occupation as being an Agricultural Laborer.  The research value in this document is the fact that Donald’s mother is also listed, as Katherine McLennan, deceased, and that’s the information I used to locate documents numbered (2) and (1). Click the following link to view the marriage document: [download id=”5″]

(4) Scotland Statutory Deaths (141/00 0031) for Donald McRae of 19 Dec 1909 which reflects Donald McRae, Retired Shepherd, died at The Croft, Aikenway, parish of Rothes, Elgin County, Scotland.

NOTE:  Both of Donald’s parents are still listed with the same names, Farquhar and Katherine, and both are listed as deceased at this time.  Farquhar McRae‘s occupation however, changed from Agricultural Laborer to Fisheurer (fisherman). Click the following link to view Donald MacRae’s death document: [download id=”10″]

I now find the necessity to examine each document that lists Farquhar McRae in relationship to a Scotland timeline.  Why?  Because the most important historical factor about Farquhar McRae was he was living in the Highlands of Scotland during the Highland Clearances.

You can read more about the Highland Clearances at WikiPedia for general background information as I will focus only on what effects the clearances would have (theory) had on Farquhar McRae and his family. (See my document research in the Document Examination category)
